Last friday, we ended the week with a bang. It was finally time for the infamous #BBQR.

It all started in the head of lovely Elke De Vilder, Head of Digital at Shortcut Ad and Belgian Twitter influencer. One year ago an ambitious idea sprung to her mind: how about brands giving back to Belgian Twitter users during a big barbecue that is entirely sponsored by brands. A way for the brands to show their appreciation for all posts made about them by the belgian Twitter scene. The brands get social traffic, the social kids get the one thing they love as much as their smartphones, food. Great win-win! One year after the plan was killed by lack of time, Timehop reminded her of this crazy idea and in only 3 weeks, thanks to the help of family, friends and favorite monkey Niel Van Herck, Elke pulled it off. A completely sponsored barbecue for over 400 Twitter lovers.

It started with a lot of tweets and retweets, inviting brands to join. The enthusiasm grew and both brands and Twitter users got excited. That’s when we decided to start tracking all #BBQR social buzz with Engagor and rescue Elke from drowning in the social sea by setting her up with an Engagor account as well. Green sentiment bars just make us all sleep better. Especially with critics joining in on the conversation after the story was picked up by several newspapers. See for yourself who got the better hand!

A lot of brands warmed to the idea, sponsoring food, drinks, lottery prizes and even cash to pay for non-sponsored goods. The limit of 400 eaters was quickly reached and lots of smiles were spotted last Friday night. Watching over each other’s shoulder to see what was being posted, was taken to the next level by setting up our Event Dashboard (a loop of different real-time social analytics).

We then happily joined in on the gathering with the Engagor team, spinning the wheel of fortune, drinking from bottles that had our own faces on the labels and having the delicious chocolate dessert before queuing up for the barbecue. We went home, some of us loaded with amazing prizes (try getting Support Ninja Jozefien’s attention away from her card board Daft Punk stand up), all of us with a smile and an evening to remember.

So kudos and thanks to Elke, Niel, all their helpers and of course TimeHop.
