A boost in professional opportunities: LinkedIn’s ‘I to the We’

It sounds a bit weird but the wording perfectly captures the idea behind it. The “I to the We”-concept was coined by LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman in his book “The Startup of You” (co-authored with Ben Casnocha). On LinkedIn it’s not only important ‘who you know’, but also ‘who the people in your network know’. That’s how it works: I to the We!
According to Manu Sharma from LinkedIn, the average LinkedIn member can get in touch with 9,000 people via their second degree network. As your network grows, your career opportunities grow with it. Research brought to light that 20% of the people moving on to another career, did so in an organisation where they already had connections through their (second degree) LinkedIn network.
Expanding your network also works for jobseekers. If you’re looking for a job, it might be wise to invest in your LinkedIn network. The data revealed that people with a growing network were 30% more likely to find a job than jobseekers with a static network!
