This time of year, most of you are probably planning for initiatives that tie directly to business objectives. Is employee development part of your plan? 1. Proactively help them make professional development choices

Most managers wait for employees to bring specific professional development opportunities to their attention. However, most employees do have a hard time know whether their choice will warrant the expense and reprioritized time to the company. Great managers will do at least one of two things – either clearly identify for their employees the types of opportunities that they’re likely to approve or curate a list of pre-approved opportunities for employees to choose from.

2. Introduce them to new mentors in your organization

Identify and introduce your team members to people who will be able to guide them in your organization. This will empower them to leverage their resources and reach out to subject matter experts for input before making decisions that could impact the entire team. The fact is, you won’t know everything that’s happening in your organization, and having advocates for your team members when you’re not there is a win for your whole team.

3. Include them when evaluating new vendors or tools

Often times, the people who will be using new tools rarely get to evaluate it before the contracts are signed. This leads to frustrated employees and friction in workflows. Your team likely has specific needs for a tool that you may not know about. They will also be able to provide context into things that may be necessary that management isn’t aware of. Remember, these are the people who will be using the product every day, so you want it to be a pleasant experience. 4. Evaluate the current state of your social engagement

5. Get suggestions, not just answers
