London 2012 Twitter sentiment on the London Eye

The London Eye has been transformed into a gigantic pie chart. Every evening during the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics it will display the Twitter sentiment towards the games through a light show. EDF Energy is the official sponsor that powers the Olympic Stadium, Olympic Park and Olympic Village during the games. They are also the ones behind, their words, “the world’s first social media driven lightshow.”

EDF Energy will analyze all tweets about the Olympics, that originate from the UK. Thus the “Energy of the Nation” will be showcased in a light show on the London Eye. As a part of the show, they will display the nation’s day-to-day sentiment towards London 2012.

I think this is a great idea to bring online data closer to the people. The only downside is that it only tracks tweets from the UK, while the Olympics are such a major international event. I can only guess this is out practical considerations: this way they only have to analyze English mentions.

Nevertheless, thumbs up for fun Olympics side effects like these!
